Denim Drive 2018
CalVCB is inviting you to help raise awareness about sexual violence with a Denim Day clothing drive from April 1–30.

About Denim Day
Denim Day originated in 1999 when the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction saying that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans, thereby implying consent.
Wearing jeans on Denim Day and collecting jeans throughout the month has become a symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault. This year’s Denim Day is observed on April 25, 2018.

In observance of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, we invite you to participate in a statewide denim clothing drive from April 1–30.
Hosted by the California Victim Compensation Board (CalVCB), the Denim Day clothing drive raises awareness about the misconceptions of sexual assault while helping families.
National Denim Day was created in honor of an 18-year old woman who was sexually assaulted by her married 45-year old driving instructor in Italy. The rapist was initially convicted, but a higher court ruling overturned the conviction. The court justices said since the victim wore tight jeans, the instructor could not take them off by himself, therefore implying consent.
Women of the Italian legislature protested the decision by wearing jeans. The case made international headlines and jeans became a symbol of the many tragic misconceptions that still surround sexual violence.
In April 1999, California established the first Denim Day in the United States and has since grown nationally. This year, Denim Day is observed on Wednesday, April 25.
Please donate new and gently used denim clothing items in the marked donation box located at [your location].
All donations will be distributed to local community shelters or organizations that help families with clothing needs.
We enthusiastically look forward to your participation and don’t forget to wear denim on April 25!
